Support the Salida Museum Association

Your membership helps us further our goals to preserve and tell the story of Salida and the surrounding area. In 2017, we replaced all fluorescent lights with LEDs to minimize UV damage to artifacts; we replaced the ceiling in the Maysville school teacher’s quarters; and improved many existing exhibits, including the Native American and military cabinets, which also received new LED lights, along with new posters and informative labels. We also held a 100th anniversary celebration at the Smokestack.

Our next big project focuses on the 1926 Porter Engine. In 1953, the Koppers Company of Pittsburgh donated a Porter Engine to the Salida Museum following the closure of its railroad tie-treating, creosote plant in Smeltertown near Salida. Built in 1926, the engine moved trams loaded with railroad ties to and from the treating shed. It is a two-foot gauge engine, with saddle tank and 0-4-0 wheel arrangement. This “dinky” was also known as the “Yard Goat” by local workers. According to records, only 130 of the 24-inch gauge tank engines were made by Porter, compared to a larger number of 36-inch models, a fact, which if true, makes the Salida Museum’s engine quite rare. Plans include professional painting, and getting reproductions for the bell, builder’s plate and front lens, which were original to the engine.

2018 Salida Museum Association Donors and Members

The Salida Museum extends its thanks to our Donors and Association Members.  Without their support, we could not continue to provide our local and out-of-town visitors with a glimpse into the rich and varied history of the Salida area.
